Why Do We Love Crashes?

by on April 6, 2008 updated April 6, 2008

If you’re old enough you’ll remember the agony of defeat video that used to be played on “The Wide World of Sports.” In this video a downhill skier wipes out and begins a massive head over heels tumble down the slope in what seems like a deadly spill. I was reminded of this when I saw a headline urging me to watch one of the worst crashed in auto racing history.

What draw us to videos of carnage? I think it’s because there’s a comforting feeling in thinking: “Damn, I’m glad that’s not me.”

Our next shot at seeing carnage?
