I can tell you right now that this whole RG3 thing is driving Redskins fans nuts. They can’t wait to see this kid on the field. Robert Griffin III brings a lot of things to the table. He’s got size, speed, and from what’s coming out of the Redskins camp, one heck of an arm. But the most encouraging thing for Redskins fans should be the attitude that RG3 is showing.
It’s not hard for fans to go nuts about athletic ability. Coming out of college most NFL prospects have that. What makes the difference in the NFL, where everyone is big and fast, is often the willingness to work. recent reports out of the Redskins OTA’s and from veterans on the team is that RG3 has everything, the whole package, not a the raw physical tools but the mental attitude to become one of the greats of the NFL.
Here’s a sample from an ESPN interview with Redskins Head Coach Mike Shanahan:
“You really never know about a guy until you spend time around him every day,” Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said. “People can see his arm strength. People can see his speed. But what you don’t know is, ‘Does he like to work? How does he get along with his teammates? When he sees a little adversity, how does he handle it? How prepared is he every day for the grind that goes with it?’ And he’s everything that I was hoping for, so that’s a big plus.”
If Shanahan is that impressed I guess we all should be. The guy just doesn’t fall in love with quarterbacks or anybody else for that matter. So if Mike Shanahan can get his spirits lifted by Griffin, I suppose Redskins fans are entitled to do it also. So I’m going to give my permission to those guys around me that follow the Redskins to go ahead and get excited. We’ll begin to find out more when Washington goes to camp, throughout the pre-season, and when Griffin lines up to take his first snap against the New Orleans Saints in the Superdome.Eric Drouant
