Upset of the Year?

On Saturday night of September 8, 2012, the #8 Arkansas Razorbacks were scheduled to play the University of Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks.  To probably everybody watching or even flipping through this game, this seemed like a easy win for Arkansas.  I was surprised to even see that it was 21-7 when Arkansas was leading.  I didn’t start paying attention until it got to the point where it was 28-14.  We all know that with college football comes excitement, and that is exactly what ULM provided.

The Warhawks scored a touchdown at the beginning of the fourth quarter to narrow the lead down to seven points.  This may have attracted more attention than the Georgia-Missouri game.  Then with a little less than three minutes left in the game,  ULM quarterback Kolton Browning threw a clutch touchdown pass on a 4th and 10.  On their next possession the Arkansas Razorbacks were driving, but were stopped by a ULM interception.  Unfortunately, the Warhawks couldn’t win it in regulation.  Then came overtime.  I was simply astounded by how impressive the ULM defense was.  They ended up holding Arkansas to a field goal.  On the Warhawks’ opportunity to score, it came down to a 4th and 1.  I personally would have kicked the field goal, but everything seemed to be going ULM’s way.  They went for a pass, but Browning couldn’t find anyone open and ran 16 yards for a touchdown.  The unranked and overlooked Warhawks beat the #8 Razorbacks in Little Rock.

Even though Arkansas lost their starting QB, fullback, and a cornerback, the Warhawks looked very determined.  The hands down player of the game was ULM quarterback Kolton Browning.  He threw for 412 yards, 3 touchdowns, and one interception.  Browning’s stats are simply amazing against an SEC defense, but the major stat that won ULM the game was fourth down conversions.  They went 6 for 7 on fourth downs.  The ULM Warhawks won the game because of these conversions.  If they would have went 3 of 7 or even 4 of 7, they wouldn’t have come out on top.

Congrats to ULM for winning a huge game against a huge opponent.  Arkansas fans, this isn’t the end of the world.  These players are very upset and are looking to regain their stature.  Next week, Alabama comes to Little Rock.  This would be the perfect game for Arkansas regain their composure.  For all of the ULM fans out there, congratulations for beating Arkansas.  Arkansas and ULM fans, come get your tickets here at Frontrow.com.
