Man, it was an unbelievable sight. Seeing Jay Bruce lose a fly ball in the lights and swing a Cincinnati Reds lead against the Philadelphia Phillies into a deficit. It’s the kind of thing you don’t expect to see happen in a game that begins the road to the World Series. But somehow this post-season things are happening that just don’t seem right. What’s even worse is that the umpires appear to have thrown away their glasses and are exerting a heavy influence on the outcome of games. Yes, Bruce flubbed the catch. But it could have been far less damaging had the umpire not gifted Chase Utley with a base on an imaginary hit by pitch. I’ve watched the replay. Utley doesn’t flinch, an unlikely non-occurence on a fastball. Ultimately, it’s a game changing call by an umpire, something you never want to see when World Series tickets are at stake.
