Phillies Almost Perfect

by on June 29, 2011 updated June 29, 2011

The Philadelphia Phillies have the best record in baseball. The Boston Red Sox miss out on having the best record in the American League by a single game. But when the two met up on the field yesterday in Philadelphia, the Phillies and Cliff Lee made the Red Sox look like an also ran, with Lee pitching a two-hit gem and Philadelphia bashing out a 5-0 win.

Lee has been on a tear lately, now having thrown three shutout games in his last three appearances. It doesn’t get any better than that. So those 50 wins the Phillies can boast of may be just the beginning. Having been pegged as a World Series contender since the spring the Philadelphia Phillies have done little to throw anyone off of their bandwagon. In fact, they may want buy a bigger wagon.

Right now the Phillies are riding a wave of success, with Phillies tickets going into sellout mode and fans beginning to believe their team can be the next World Series Champion. Cliff Lee is certainly a big part of that, though he has taken pains to credit his teammates and downplay his own performance. According to Lee, he’s just been lucky. But the guy who some call the face of the Philadelphia Phillies has been standing tall all season, and come October, he’ll have to stay standing to get Philadelphia their just reward.
