The New Orleans Saints defense may have been the most improved unit in the NFL last season, advancing ffrom a last place spot in 2012 to a Top 10 spot in 2014 under new coordinator Rob Ryan. That improvement wasn’t evident today though as the New Orleans Saints cut some well known names to get their salary cap numbers under control.
Will Smith, who has been the veteran lineman for New Orleans for 12 years was released, saving New Orleans over $11 million.
Jabari Greer was also released. Greer has been a defensive stalwart for the Saints the last year but his injury opened the door for some younger players and improvements elsewhere in the secondary gave New Orleans some options.
Jonathan Vilma hasn’t been a factor at the linebacker spot for two years, although his presence as a team leader has kept him around.
Finally, safety Roman Harper, the grey haired elder statesman of the Saints secondary was made expendable by his high salary and the emergence of Kenny Vaccaro in his rookie year.
