The first preseason games of the NFL are history and we’re finding a few names and features that appear to stand out. Some newcomers are poised to make a difference in the upcoming season. There are also some disturbing trends.
Blake Bortles – Jacksonville Jaguars – Bortles was a 1st Round pick for the Jaguars and he may be starting sooner rather than later. Bortles was 7 of 11 for 117 yards and looked composed under pressure. NOt pert, but composed. Considering the Jaguars recent history and the upside of Blake Bortles, well, maybe start the kid now?
De’Anthony Thomas – Kansas City Chiefs – It’s hard to picture a better way to get your coach’s attention than an 80-yards punt return for a touchdown but that’s just what Thomas did against the Bengals.
Brandin Cooks – New Orleans Saints – The rookie 1st Rounder has been tearing it up in camp and his first NFL game gave him his first NFL touchdown. Cooks took a short pass, made and explosive cut, and turned it into a 25-yard score.
Michael Sam – St. Louis Rams – Distractions or not, Sam made some solid plays against the Saints.
The Defense – Chicago Bears – The disaster of 2013 may be the triumph of 2014. The Bears defense did an excellent job against the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Defense – Dallas Cowboys – The disaster of 2013 may get worse. The Cowboys defense gave up 395 yards against the San Diago Chargers.
