You gotta be a fanatic to really get into NFL re-season games. i find it interesting myself, if purely for the sake of enhancing my fantasy football late round picks with some possible gems. For here in the pre-season is where you’ll find those guys who can make the difference between playing for the money or buying the next round. In any case, the early games were so-so, but still interesting to nutcases like me.
The New York Jets took a 24-20 win over the Cleveland Browns in Cleveland. The interesting part is that they did it mostly with big plays. less interesting to me was the presence of Brett Favre on the sidelines. The Jets have much to answer for after backsliding from a playoff team in 2006 to 4-12 in 2007. Favre MIGHT help but the core doesn’t seem to be there.
Meanwhile, the Chicago Bears also seem to be looking for quarterback leadership as they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs at home in Soldier Field. Neither Kyle Orton or Rex Grossman stepped up. The good news for the Chiefs. Larry Johnson looks ready to shoulder the load again.
The New Orleans Saints topped the Arizona Cardinals 24-10. Fantasy footballers should keep an eye on Robert Meacham, who caught four passes and scored once for New Orleans. If Meacham wins a starting job across from Marques Colston he could see good numbers in 2008. But don’t jump on anything just yet. For the Cardinals, Matt Leinart looked composed and capable.
