The whole time this NFL free agency circus has been going, the Green Bay Packers have remained relatively quiet. No big signings, no major moves. Well, the Packers finally got on the board yesterday by signing former Bears lineman Julius Peppers to a three-year deal. Peppers never generated a lot of buzz because of age and declining performance. But the folks in Green Bay obviously feel he has something to offer. We’ll see. Back in Chicago, Bears fans aren’t really happy to see their division rival plucking at their roster. Peppers biggest downside in Chicago was the fact that his production didn’t match his $13 million salary. Green Bay is giving him somewhat less and Peppers may be playing with some fire, something to prove, after being accused of giving it less than his all in Chicago.
Elsewhere, Hakeem Nicks has now landed in Indianapolis, signing a one year deal with the Colts. Nicks seemed to be struggling with the Giants last year, though he did catch 56 passes. The one season status of this contract means the Colts weren’t willing to commit to a long term deal or it could mean that Nicks is looking to have a good season and parlay that into a longer term contract in Indianapolis.
The Oakland Raiders are said to be be sitting pat, waiting for cuts to find themselves a quarterback. The Raiders are said to be interested in either Matt Schaub or Mark Sanchez. Both QB’s have had their struggles of late and can probably be had for less than elite salaries.
