The New York Yankees have always been big spenders, always willing to break the bank to sign players. Over the years it’s been succesful but lately it hasn’t panned out. The Yankees topped the MLB last year with over $200 million in salaries. The Boston Red Sox punched their World Series tickets and eventual championship with a mere $155 million.
The 2008 MLB season looks like a return to some fiscal reality as the Yankees will spend just under the $200 million mark. Is Steinbrenner taking a cue from the Red Sox and trying to make more effective use of his money? Time will tell and there’s still an opportunity for the big splurge. The truth is, New York would be better served to build a TEAM rather than a collection of MLB All Stars.Eric Drouant
