It usually doesn’t take long after the NBA All Star Game for folks around the league to wake up and realize the NBA season is rushing forward fast and the push is on. In the first wave of action as teams prepare for the playoffs the Dallas Mavericks have traded for Caron Butler and Brendan Haywood from the Washington Wizards. Butler is good enough to have made an All Star roster twice. The move improves the Mavericks talentwise and depthwise and makes for some optimism that they could go somewhere in the playoffs.
It also signals some worry on the part of the Mavericks owners. they’ve been in a funk lately and obviously felt some changes were needed. As for the Washington Wizards it signals they’re pretty much throwing in the towel on the season. At 17-33 the Wizards have no hope. The whole Arenas meltdown is pretty much complete.
