The Boston Red Sox look to be getting their game on for a very good postseason run, possibly even a visit to the World Series. If you look at the standings in the AL East you would have a difficult time seeing anyone catching up to Boston. Tampa Bay has a shot, being 5.5 games back. Possibly even the New York Yankees though they’re 8 games back and ailing. But the way the Boston Rd Sox are playing right now makes either one of those scenarios highly unlikely.
That fact was put on display last night in Boston as the Red Sox simply exploded with an onslaught of hits, including eight home runs from seven different players, to top the Detroit Tigers 20-4. No, that’s not a misprint. Boston unleashed 20 runs against the hapless Tigers covering everything from milestone hits to a Grand Slam to a two-home run performance from David Ortiz. In the end, it was everything a Red Sox fans could hope for in a team that seems to have locked down their playoff spot.
What’s more, this victory came against the Detroit Tigers, who appeared inept last night, but have actually won 81 games and are leading the AL Central as we speak. The Red Sox are on a winning streak, capturing nine of their last 11, and now head to Yankee Stadium for a four game series against the Yankees. Optimists in New York are calling for a sweep. The reality is that Boston can virtually eliminate the Yankees from the playoffs if they continue to perform as they have the past three weeks.
