As muddled as the BCS picture is there’s no doubt that the outcomeof the upcoming LSU vs Arkansas game will have a major impact on the national championship. Should LSU prevail they would be the leading contender for a spot in the BCS National Championship Game. Of course, they will still have to deal with Georgia. A loss there, with Georgia claiming the SEC Championship, would create a huge problem on that side. But I think I can say with some certainty that the biggest obstacle facing LSU right now is the Arkansas Razorbacks.
Sitting at #1 in the polls the Arkansas Razorbacks are plainly dangerous. Having weathered early losses, Arkansas has been on a run that’s been brilliant in both it’s length and versatility. At few points were the Razorbacks ever completely in charge and yet somehow they’ve managed to rebound within games as well as they’ve rebounded within their season. This makes them a team that’s not beaten until the final gun. Special teams could play a huge role in this game. LSU’s defense can play heady football all game long but a single breakdown on special teams, like letting Joe Adams effect the game with a breakaway return or even doing some serious damage in the field position battle, could alter the outcome significantly.
More to the point, should the Arkansas Razorbacks prevail and knock off unbeaten LSU, what would the BCS do then? Advance a 2-loss Razorbacks? Advance a 1-loss LSU Tigers? Advance a 1-loss Alabama squad? What a mess.
