The LA Dodgers are now existing in limbo. The power of Major League Baseball fell on the Dodgers yesterday as the MLB assumed control of the franchise, saying in effect that things have gotten way out of hand and the game of baseball is suffering because of it. It’s probably not too far off the mark either. I don’t think there’s any doubt that the whole divorce issue has had a detrimental effect on the LA Dodgers. Right now LA is playing .500 ball at 10-10 and not looking to good doing it.
But to me, Major League Baseball is opening up a can of worms here. By using the excuse of poor performance as their justification for taking over the only questions I can ask are: What about the Pittsburgh Pirates? What about the New York Mets? Not winning isn’t an excuse to do anything.
I think the MLB would have been better served to sit back awhile and let the dust settle before making a move, if necessary. yes, there are some problems, but baseball players on the field aren’t thinking about rulings by judges. Let the negotiations and dealing happen in the courtroom and the boardroom. Once things are on solid ground as far as ownership is concerned, the Dodgers will even out and maybe even excel.
