The Indianapolis Colts are in very rare territory. For the last decade the Colts have been a model of consistency, dominating the AFC South, winning a Super Bowl, and in general showing the rest of the NFL how to get things done.
Of course during that time Indianapolis has had the benefit of an indestructible Peyton Manning. Since his rookie season Manning has never missed a game. He’s also won multiple MVP honors and leads the NFL in a ton of career stats. In essence, the Indianapolis Colts have been built around Peyton Manning and his presence is an undeniably crucial factor in their success.
So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Colts aren’t nearly as good without him. But I don’t believe any of knew how hard the Colts would struggle without him. The Indianapolis Colts are a one trick pony and that pony better be behind center. So now Indianapolis must find another horse to ride and the one good thing to come out of their struggles this season could be the opportunity to draft Andrew Luck with the first pick in the draft next year.
As it stand the Colts right now are in contention with the St. Louis Rams and Miami Dolphins for that first pick. Do they pack it in, lose the rest of their games, and nab that pick? Is that what Colts ticket holders want? For the moment it’s a tempting thought.Eric Drouant
