When you’re playing for a spot in the postseason, you rarely want that last seed. So when the Memphis Grizzlies spent the last few games of the NBA season basically coasting and not worrying about getting the #8 seed and playing the #1 seed, Memphis Grizzlies tickets holders were dumbfounded and many were angry. It was like a slap in the face and most planned for an early out for Memphis.
But apparently the coaches and players knew more than we did. Imagine that. The Memphis Grizzlies are now 3-1 against the San Antonio Spurs and could conceivably finish things off tonight, though I expect the Spurs have one more win in them. But it is an interesting take on playoff strategy and Memphis has reaped the benefit of healthy and well rested players. In fact, last Monday the Memphis Grizzlies, who prior to this season, had never tasted victory in the playoffs, looked like a dominant force in the NBA by topping the favored Spurs 104-86. That’s kind of amazing.
Are the Memphis Grizzlies that good or are the San Antonio Spurs just a paper tiger? I guess we’ll get the answer to that question in a few days. Either the Spurs will sink into oblivion and scratch their wounds or the Memphis Grizzlies will write a new chapter in their history. From the way things are going I would have to say the Grizzlies will move on. How far they’ll get is another question but it’s time for the Spurs to re-group.
