St. Louis Cardinals tickets have been banging away at the NL Central as the Cards make a run at the postseason. It’s been a torturous run, a rally achieved despite the growing mountain of injuries on the Cardinals roster. Still, heading into this week, the St. Louis Cardinals were leading a wave in the division, on top of both the Brewers and the improving Washington Nationals.
Now the Cardinals will be playing in desperation, trying to hold on to a shot at the playoffs without star Albert Pujols and it’s going to be one tough task to stay ahead. Pujols will be out of baseball for 4-6 weeks after suffering a fractured wrist during a collision with Wilson Betemit of the Kansas City Royals yesterday. It’s the kind of thing that’s been happening in St. Louis, where the Cardinals now have 8 players on the disabled list.
Pujols and the Cardinals have been in a kind of friendly standoff after the three-time MVP turned down big money in the offseason, with the idea of hitting the free agent market next season. While Pujols has been as productive as any player in his position, the St. Louis Cardinals will have to find a way to win without him. The National League Central is not the toughest division in Major League Baseball, the Milwaukee Brewers may not be able to be held off without Pujols, and even the Washington Senators could grab a game or two on St. Louis, who will be wondering about the vagaries of fate and pining for Pujols return.Eric Drouant
