Arizona Cardinals Flying

┬áHoly Cow! I just took a gander at the standings in the NFC West and the Arizona Cardinals, halfway through the NFL season, have a three game lead over the #2 team in their division. Does this mean the Cardinals are a playoff caliber team? Well, yes. If you make the playoffs you’re a playoff caliber team right? OK.

The Cardinals arrive at a 5-3 record at midpoint with some timely play that has been denied them in the past. Most memorably the blcked punt that led to a touchdown and an overtime win over the Dallas Cowboys. More impressive in my mind was the 41-17 victory over the Biffalo Bills, at the time one of the hotter teams in the NFL. The fact that Arizona sent the Bills into a downward spiral is only grist for the mill.

The Cardinals do have a tougher second half to their season. While padded with patsies like the Seattle Seahawks and St. Louis Rams, you’ll also find the Giants, Eagles, Vikings, and Patriots on the schedule. Would the fans at University of Phoenix Stadium be happy with a 4-4 run to end the season and an NFC West crown at 9-7? You betcha. They’ll eat it up.
