Parity in the NHL

The NFL surely must be jealous of the NHL. After years of trying to achieve parity, they still end up with the Miami Dolphins going 1-15 and the New England Patriots at 16-0. It must be driving them nuts because if you take a look at the NHL, currently no team is more than five games ahead of any other team in the league. At this point any NHL franchise can claim a legitimate shot at the Stanley Cup. It’s going to make for one of the more interesting finishes in league history.

Making the MLB Steroid Issue Go Away

MLB players under suspicion of using performance enhancing drugs have mostly stumbled ther way through interviews and questioning by saying as little as possible. Here’s my take on how the MLB can rid themselves of this issue.

1) More testing and harsh punishments. Something like: Use and You’re banned for life.

2) Make every player under suspicion do what Andy Pettite did. Stand up in front of reporters for an hour and answer every question with honesty and humility. He’s the only one in this whole sordid mess to stand up and be a man.  Do that and you’re welcomed back with open arms. Skirt the issue and you can kiss your career goodbye.

Hornets Buzzing in NBA Southwest

Long the forgooten team in the Western Conference the New Orleans Hornets now have some sting. Currently in a dead heat with the San Antonio Spurs for first place, the Hornets find themselves in an unusual position of being real contenders. To help make that happen, the Hornets added to their depth by trading for Bonzi Wells and Mike James from the Houston Rockets. They’ll need the added sting when the NBA Playoffs come around.

The Many Sides of Sunset

The sun sets on everyting. It signals an end, sometimes a good one, sometimes a disappointing, and well, sometimes it’s one that rather strange.

1) Sometime in the next few weeks the sun will set on the season of a team that has gone to the Final Four and taken home the prize. It will be a bittersweet ending as sometimes the chase is better than the prize.

2) Other teams will win smaller prizes, like an ACC Tournament, but fail to capture a national championship. A sweet season with a bitter end but still a good one.

3) Other teams will be hapy to see the sun set on their season. Like the New Jersey Institute of Technology that just went 0-29

4) As for me, I see the sun set in Camp Anaconda. Another day gone and one day closer to home as the sun sets over the Porta-Johns.

Penalties Abound in NASCAR

The 50th Daytona 500 will be remembered as a race where a long suffering long shot made his mar. It will also be remembered for the number of penalties being doled out for race teams with infractions. 10 teams have been hit with fines and point deductions. As the Auto Club 500 and the UAW-Dodge 400 approach, the rankings have taken a major shift. Escaping unscathed did more for man teams than the race itself.

As NASCAR becomes more competitive it seems as if the number of crimes increases. Maybe it’s time to start doling out harsher penalties. Cheating, whether it be steroids in the MLB and NFL or technical cheating in NASCAR, can destroy any sport.

Alicia Keys #1

Looking for a great concert by a top selling artist? Try Alicia Keys tickets for her May 14 show at NOKIA Live at Grand Prairie in Texas. Keys finds herself at the top of the chart with the #1 selling album in the country.

The #2 spot is held by Sarah Brightman and her Symphony album, followed by Sara Bareilles. Noticing a trend here? The women are dominating the top three spots.

An NBA Hanger On?

In any sport there are some guys who just don’t want to let go. It’s an understandable thing. Who would want to give up the pay and prestige of playing professional sports? Now Shaq has headed to the Phoenix Suns, hoping to rekindle some NBA magic with a new team. The fact that’s he’s obviously getting older, has had problems with injuries the last few years, and may not be a perfect fit for thier running system, has some fans quaestioning whether he should have retired.

Even Phil Jackson has gotten into the act, saying O’ Neals role is now “taking the ball out of bounds and waiting for the other team to get back.” Ouch.

Good move on the Suns part or not? Time will tell.

A Bronco Far From Home

Joshua Widdicombe - Die Hard Denver Broncos fan

Presented for your viewing pleasure is PFC Joshua Widdicombe of Stockton, California. Joshua is currently in Balad at Camp Anaconda. As you can see from the picture he’s a Denver Broncos fan. How does he feel about the Bronco’s recent 7-9 season and non-playoff showing?

“The Broncos need to open up the passing game a little. They’re too run oriented. They can’t make another Terrell Davis just by handing off the ball a lot. ”

Despite his difference of opinion with the coaches, PFC Widdicombe is confident Denver can bounce back next year and compete for a Super Bowl berth in the AFC.

Sports Fans in Iraq

What do sports fans in Iraq do when the big games come on? They do like sports fans everywhere and throw a barbecue. Nick Collins, the guy on the far right in the brown jacket is a UNLV fan. Luis Castillo, in the blue shirt behind the barbecue pit, is a Dallas Cowboys  fanatic who says the Cowboys are going to the Super Bowl next year.

Sports Tickets I would Buy

If I were not stuck in Iraq, 7,000 miles from home, here’s the Sports Tickets I would buy for March:

Kobalt Tools 500 – Two reasons, one is my wife’s family lives not far away from Hampton and two, I like the Georgia Satellites song “Don’t tell me no lies”. And of course, NASCAR in general.

Food City 500 Tickets – I like food too. And NASCAR

Zurich Classic of New Orleans Tickets – If you haven’t been to New Orleans, March is the time to go before it gets too hot and steamy. Plus, crawfish are in season.

Tennis Channel Open Tickets – It would be like watching tennis on TV except no commercials, plus I could wave like an idiot every time the camera came my way.

NHL Tickets for the March 3 game featuring the Anaheim Ducks against the Ottawa Senators. Anytime Ducks have a chance to knock off Senators I want to be there. It’s a political thing.

Bob Dylan Tickets for any of his dates at the House of Blues in Dallas. The last time I saw Bob Dylan was during his Rolling Thunder Revue tour at The Warehouse in New Orleans. Too long ago for me to think about. Ok, so it’s not a sports ticket but ain’t it a great way to wrap up a great month?
