Frustrated year after year Nadal has pegged this U.S. Open as his. He came a step closer yesterday with a victory over Denis Istomin, a win that puts him within striking reach of the finals. Although Nadal has been the winner of eight major tournaments and has a Grand Slam within striking distance, the U.S. Open has never been a feather in his cap. That could change in 2010.

If you’re looking for a great way to kick off your NFL season then maybe you should try Vikings vs Saints tickets. This matchup has to be the most highly anticipated rematch of the last couple of years. Flash back to last season as the Vikings and Saints met in the Louisiana superdome. All season long the Minnesota Vikings were among the NFL elite, with a rejuvenated Brett Favre making the crucial difference in key moments. All season long the New Orleans Saints seemed a team of destiny, running out to 13-0 and destroying Kurt Warner and the Arizona Cardinals in the divisional game of the NFL Playoffs.

Something had to give. In this case it was the Vikings, as the Saints forced five turnovers and pressured a badlt beaten Brett Favre into a crucial interception that allowed New Orleans to win in overtime. During the offseason Vikings fans wailed about everything from poor officiating to an NFL post-Katrina conspiracy. Make no mistake, the Minnesota Vikings are coming to the Superdome looking for a measure of revenge. They’ve got Favre back. Unfortunately Sidney Rice is out and Percy Harvin is a big question mark. Minnesota is going to trying to work in new receivers and depend on Adrian Peterson to keep the opportunistic Saints defense at bay.

The New Orleans Saints meanwhile, will be missing Darren Sharper, a thief of epic proportions. A re-tooled defensive line, designed to stop the run, hasn’t been great in the pre-season. But Drew Brees and the mega-offense of the Saints could possibly be even better than 2009. It’s going to be a great way to open a season.

The Arizona Cardinals are only one season away from playing in a Super Bowl. They are less than a season away from playing in the playoffs. The Super Bowl effort ended with a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers and the playoff loss came at the hands of the New Orleans Saints. Both opportunities came under the guidance of Kurt Warner. But now warner is gone and for awhile it looked as if the Cardinals would at last be the team of Matt Leinart.

Alas, it appears not to be. The rumored party boy and less than perfect teammate is now riding the knife edge of an ignonimous release from the Cardinals roster. arizona is rumored to be looking for a trade for the former USC star, whose claim to fame now looks to be a good showing in a losing effort in the BCS National Championship Game. It’s a long fall from #1 draft pick to shaking hands with the Turk. Bu according to sources close to the Arizona Cardinals,Leinart has failed to take advantage of his own talent and the tutelage of Kurt Warner. So be it.

The Pittsburgh Steelers Ben Roethlisberger certainly made his offseason interesting. So interesting he’s going to miss out on a quarter of the 2010 NFL season. And that’s an improvement from last week when Big Ben was scheduled to miss six games. But by being a good boy, saying he’s sorry, and keeping his nose clean, Roethlisberger has managed to get back in the good braces of the NFL.

Now all that’s left is for the Pittsburgh Steelers to get through the first month of the season without their starting QB. That means living through and opener against the Atlanta Falcons in Atlanta, road games with the Tennessee Titans and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and another home game at Heinz with the Baltimore Ravens. Obviously the Falcona and the Ravens offer the biggest challenge. So I’m thinking if the Pittsburgh Steelers can end up at 2-2 after four weeks and Big Ben isn’t too rusty, the Steelers have a chance at being full speed. Now whether full speed is good enough to win their division remains to be seen.

While most of my attention has been directed toward the NFL the college football season kinda snuck up on me. But this 2010 college football season has a lot to it. I’m wondering, down here in LSU Tiger Land, whether or not I’ll have to watch Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide embark on another BCS National Championship run. I think the odds are good. While there are tons of LSU fans down here with a seething hatred toward Saban. I’m not one of them. He took a shot at the NFL, didn’t like it, and returned to what he knows best. It just happened that Alabama was the best job available. So be it.

Elsewhere in college football, we’ll see what basicall amounts to a lot of warmup games for the major pwers and ranked teams, plenty of blowouts and runovers. Neither Alabama nor Nebraska nor Florida or any Top ten team seems to be interested in getting it on early. But just wait a few weeks my friends, those college football tickets are going to get real interesting real soon.

Roger Federer wants another U.S. Open and he wants it bad. It’s not surprising. the guy may have aged a little but he’s still got what it takes to keep opponents reeling. And having won four or five U.S. Open Championships, the exact number escapes me and I’m too lazy to look it up, Roger Federer knows how to get it done. Furthermore, he’s not afraid to roll with change, having just announced that he’s employing the services of Paul Annacone to help him be at his best for the 2010 U.S. Open.

But this may be the most challenging U.S. Open of his career. At some point Federer may have to deal with Rafael Nadal, who trying to win a Grand slam. Or it could be Andy Roddick. Or maybe Andy Murray. Or sopme other rising young star we don’t know about. In other words there’s no shortage of competition at this U.S. Open and if Roger Federer wants another one he’ll probably have to play some of the best tennis of his career.

Should the NFL go to an 18 game regular season? Heck, I don’t know. It would definitely make things more interesting for about two weeks. Every NFL ticket holder gets 20 NFL tickets in his hands every year. He pays the same price for a pre-season ticket as he does for a regular season ticket. But he doesn’t get the same quality of play. He doesn’t get to see the best players. And for the most part, the average NFL fan doesn’t care as much about the pre-season as he does about the “REAL” season.

My biggest concern is whether an NFl team can truly prepare in two weeks. Should the pre-season be shortened, would those surprise players get a chance to develop? For instance, last night against the San Diego Chargers, Saints undrafted rookie Chris Ivory got plenty of playing time, did well, and broke open a 76-yard TD catch and run that was beautiful to behold. In an 18 game NFL ticket season, Ivory would probably not have been on the field and may not have made the team. Now he’s a lock. Think about it.

The excitement surrounding Green Bay Packers tickets just took off like an RPG. I don’t know how I missed this but the Packers offense just lambasted the defending AFC Champion Indianapolis Colts for…..59 points. You read that right, 59 points. Say what you want about this being just the pre-season but there’s not an NFL team around that can shake off 59 points and feel good about it, pre-season or no.

With six offensive touchdowns to their credit, the Packers made the Colts look like chumps. And the problems for the Colts extend to the special teams as well, where they gave up two mors scores. For the Green Bay Packers and their fans it’s just raising the bar to another level, one where they feel they can slide under the media darling Minnesota Vikings and drive a spike into the heart of the vampire Brett Favre. The Packers are geared for a Super Bowl. They’ve got a Pro Bowl quarterback, a thieving defense, and a crop of youngsters thirsty for their first drink of glory. It all adds up to great things for Green Bay Packers tickets in 2010.

The New York Jets have created a monster for themselves. They’ve taken a fan base all the way to an AFC Championship with a rookie quarterback at the helm and now they’ve promised that same Jets fan base a Super Bowl. It all comes with the territory when you have Rex Ryan on board. But in the real world the New York Jets have got to produce, which means they’ve got to put points on the board. It’s something they have yet to do in the pre-season. Last night the Jets offense managed to produce 11 points against the Washington Redskins, a tally that won’t hold up in most NFL games. And it didn’t last night. Right now the problem is blamed on being a “vanilla” offense and not tipping their hand before the 2010 NFL season. But if the New York Jets continue to muddle along once the show begins, expect the fur to fly.

Each and every year an NFL team comes in ready to repeat as Super Bowl Champions. The New Orleans Saints are no different. But having won the Super Bowl at a pivotal moment in an NFL labor dispute, the Saints may have caught a break. Most winners of the Super Bowl are stripped of talent on both the player level and the coaching level. The New Orleans Saints lost only Scott Fujita, a capable but not extraordinary linebacker, and Mike Bell, a capable but not extraordinary running back. here’s why I think the New Orleans Saints have a good chance of getting back to the Super Bowl.

1) As indicated above, all the biggest impact players are returning.

2) Both Sean Payton and Drew Brees are remarkable leaders, and the combination of the two can’t be found anywhere else in the NFL.

3) Undrafted rookie Chris Ivory shows every sign of being better than Mike Bell and could surpass Bell’s contributions.

4) Running back Reggie Bush is healthier than he’s ever been.

5) The Saints defense could be better, but still seems to have the ability to generate takeaways.

6) Lance Moore returns to a receiving corp that has no equal in the NFL in terms of across the board depth.

7) Judging by pre-season play, the New Orleans offense is still the best in the NFL

While the Saints special teams play hasn’t been great it’s gotten better in the last pre-season game against the Chargers

9) Fullback Heath Evans returns healthy and provides Brees with another weapon and better blocking than they had for most of last season.

The biggest impact of all will come from the leadership of the New Orleans Saints. This is a team that buys in big time when Brees and Payton speak, and has been handpicked by Payton for both talent and character. When the hard times come, and they wioll, this is an NFL team that will stick together.
