There were plenty of fans worried about the San Francisco 49ers in the preseason. For a team whose defense carried them all season long, things were looking like they were unraveling. But it obviously isn’t so as the 49ers still seem to be the toughest defense in the NFL, keeping a lid on what should be an explosive Detroit Lions offense in a 27-19 win this weekend.
Last week it was the 49ers who put the cap on Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers, a performance that propelled them to a win in Lambeau Field. This week the 49ers stifled Mathew Stafford, holding him to 19 completions in 32 attempts. Calvin Johnson had a good game but his performance wasn’t enough and may have been the only good performance for the whole Lions offense.
And as much as I hate to admit it but Alex Smith actually put together his second admirable game in as many weeks. This San Francisco 49ers team isn’t really built in a modern NFL fashion, one that dictates and explosive offense. The 49ers tend to grind it out with Frank Gore, and dink and dunk their way down the field with short passes. But hey, it’s working isn’t it? A win’s a win and San Francisco will be tough to beat for any NFL club if they keep opposing offenses in check the way they’ve been doing.
