OK, the Kentucky Derby is set to run on May 5th and it’s time to get ready, make a mint julep and get into training for the most widely acclaimed horse race in the world. Right now the stage is set and the field is steady so let’s take a look at a few of the horses and jockeys that could find their way to the finish line first.
From what I’m seeing, Bodemeister has to be seen as a front-runner. Ridden by jockey Mike Smith, Bodemeaster is owned by Zayat Stables, and trained by Bob Baffert, who’s won the Kentucky Derby three times. Gotta like those odds.
But you also have to be wary of Union Rags, and if you’re a guy who picks his horses by name like me, then this is your horse. Owned by Chadds Ford Stable and ridden by Julien Leparoux, Union Rags is an odds favorite but try and remember that doesn’t mean he’s a lock. Favorites have a way of falling in the Kentucky Derby.
Here’s a list of a few more horses in the Kentucky Derby I’d cheer for, based solely on their monikers.
Sabercat – Just a cool name
I’ll Have another – Just a good name for a horse in the Kentucky Derby.
Done Talking – A serious horse
Daddy Nose Best – Good play on words here.
